Chickens Make Great Pets

It's spring and I have insomnia again as I do every spring. This year I have Irish red potatoes, Vidalia onions green and purple onions that have filled my garden. Leaving me with way too much property to til up and make flower beds in.

I've learned alot since moving from the Michigan living in a sub-division in the city and going to 3 acres in the country in the South of Georgia. I've had to completely re-learn everything I knew about gardening!

I have discovered Chickens! I've got the space why not! My family calls me Elly Mae! Last year about this time I decided I wanted to raise chickens form biddies (this is what they call baby chicks here). I started by buying a roll of chicken wire every week for several weeks so as my husband wouldn't know what I was up to and wouldn't notice it in his pocketbook. I'm sneaky that way!Rhode Island Reds Then I sprung it on him one day when he got home! I had 4 baby chickens in a rubbermade tub on the back sun porch. It was kinda backwards, but that's how I roll! So if anyone asks you what comes first, the chicken or the coop? It's the chickens! You see that's my way of making sure the hubby doesn't find something better to do with his uh, (my) time.  So now he had to build the coop you see!

Now it's spring again and I've learned alot more about these cool little birds. one is each hen lays 1 egg a day and I have 2 and that make roughly about a dozen eggs a week. I don't know if any of you have noticed but eggs have gotten expensive! I bought them for Easter to dye (mine are brown) and they were $2.59! These eggs go so quickly in our house with my 4 kids I need more hens.

I bet you didn't know that there are chicken that lay blue eggs and green eggs! Mine lay the brown type, actually one hen lays a lighter shade of brown more of a tan and the other brown though they are the same breed of birds.

The next thing for my coop with be the Auracana chickens which are the green and blue layers, they also call them Easter chicks. They are white feathers and they usually shoot colored dyes into their shell just before they hatch to make them easter colors. I will try to post some pictures if I can take some at the feed store.

The feed comes in 50 lb bags and usually lasts me 2 months or so and costs about $10. They just need fresh water daily and the in return give you fresh eggs and a rooster will give you a wonderful sounding wake-up call in the morning. Mine usually says goodbye to my husband at 5:45am. and then he is quiet til the school buses start coming down the road.

All and all I'm happy I ventured into chickens and would recommend them to anyone that has the land for them.
