This Azalea was put here in 1969 as a regular one gallon sized plant. It has grown into a shrub whose branches reach the tops of the windows when it's not trimmed. Yet, another testament to my mother's love for beautiful flowers.

Boy Maw

Boy Maw, That Azalea sure makes me home sick! That is one thing that I miss about living in Mobile. When all the azaleas start blooming there is color everywhere. Thanks for sharing, Kat.

Hi Kat....

I can only imagine how beautiful Mobile must be when the azaleas are in bloom! I sure love my little touch of it here in Monroe, LA!!

Absolutely beautiful!

What a gorgeous thing to have climbing up to your windows, maw! I've seen a few of those around here, but would you believe that where my mother lives, they can only be grown as houseplants? Kat, you could grow one as a house plant, you know.....

I don't know what would have torn you away from the south, but then again, before I moved down here, I would have said the same thing about the north. hehehe I sure do like this longer growing season and all those magnificent tropicals!

Hello Susan

Hello Susan,

You know I have heard about people growing them in pots and as houseplants but never thought about doing it myself til now. Maybe I could grow them as house plants that would make my Northern home feel more like the South. Hee Hee!

I moved up here to be closer to my sister. We had never met before only wrote letters and talked on the phone on occasion. So I decided to move up here after my parents passed because I didn't have anything keeping me there except my best friend/ sister and her family. I decided it was time to find out about my other half that I have never met. Well I live right down the road from my sister and I see her when I can which it not to often and my two brothers I still have yet to meet them. But anyway I sure do miss the South and if I get a chance to go back I will definitely take it! I don't like cabin fever and feeling sick all the time and the price and distance of everything is awful! so yes I definitely am one that will stay a Southern Belle always Hee Hee! Well Have to go I need to get some rest I worked 8 hrs today and my feet are giving me fits but I will chat with ya'll later. Happy Gardening, Kat.

Cabin fever...........

isn't just a northern thing, but I have to say, those northern winters would drive me crazy. Here in Texas, the distances are very vast....or so it seems...........We're living in an apartment at the moment, and that's pretty hateful -- both for lack of gardening space and lack of living space. I hope that we can find a house sometime in the not too distant future.

Seriously though, there are a lot of things that you probably would have grown down south that can be grown up north if you grow them most of the year as house plants. You'll have to harden them off before taking them outside for the summer months. Gradually get them used to outside temperatures and sunlight.....but don't leave them out all night.

My family is all up north. My brother and sister live out east: my brother who is a school principal lives in western Massachusetts, and my sister who is a school counselor and social work by training lives in Northern Virginia.....My mom is just outside of Chicago. My step kids, step grand kids and brothers in law and sister in law are all in Iowa.

When my husband first mentioned moving south, I hemmed and hawed about it, but then I realized that being with him was most important and I thought that getting away from harsh Iowa winters would be something to celebrate.

Hello Susan

Hello Susan,

Yes, Cabin Fever is what you get during those cold harsh Northern winters. I get it so far every winter. My doctor puts me on medicine for it because it causes depression among other things. I thinkwith me being from the South and never having to worry about snow that it effects me even more than say a actual Northerner. Yes, I too know about the apartment life and not being able to garden except for container garden. I guess that is why I always grew houseplants even when I wasn't apartment living. Well Happy Gardening, Kat
